9:00 AM -10:15 AM – Rory Klick Backyard Restoration Ecology
Native landscapes are not part of our everyday surroundings. True native ecosystems are rare places in our world today, and most people have never set foot in a prairie or woodland that is of high ecologic quality. Even if we look to those remnants as our model, they may not translate well to the suburban landscape. Yet over 60% of Lake County land is in private ownership, so how can we as residential gardeners bring some of that native biodiversity into our landscapes, and do so in a way that addresses both the functional (how things work) and the aesthetic (how things look)?
This presentation will focus on the basic tenants of ecologic restoration that every home gardener should know, and discuss the various purposes that restoration projects can have – aesthetic, functional and scientific. How can home gardeners balance functional goals for their landscape with design issues, and still respect the science? The holistic and practical process of planning, design, sourcing, implementation and maintenance will be discussed.

10:40 AM – 11:50 AM – Kelsay Shaw Native Plants as Landscaping Problem Solvers
We all have those spots in our yard that just don’t look great. It may be an area where water gathers, or a hot, dry place beyond the reach of the hose. How about that area that gets no sun or under those pines that’s just dirt? Is there a native ground cover? What are sedges, and where would I use them in my yard? There’s a swale on my property, what can I plant there?
This is the presentation that will answer those questions and more. Choosing the right native will transform those problem areas into wonderful additons to your natural garden. Our speaker, Kelsay Shaw believes there is a native for every situation, without exception, and he can prove it!

12:15 PM – 1:25 PM – John Mariani Native Landscapes with Visual Appeal
John Mariani is especially passionate about the natural world, always promoting a healthy environment by including native plants in his designs. With his company, Land Serve LLC – Landscape for Life, he creates landscape disigns that offer a richer outdoor experience that stand the test of time.
This naturalistic landscape design is very difficult to attain successfully. The key to John’s approach to a natural design is more arranged than chaotic; perhaps to the delight of those less thrilled by the “weed patch” effect most often associated with other poorly designed examples of natural gardens. Mariani will offer recommendations for creating a traditional design using native plants so you can create a healthy, sustainable landscape in your yard.
