Many of the native grasses and wildflowers used in Lake County Forest Preserves restoration projects get their start at the districts own 5-acre Native Seed Nursery at Rollins Savanna. Native seed nurseries are fascinating places dedicated to growing and preserving native plant species. Unlike conventional nurseries that might focus on ornamental or non-native species, native seed nurseries prioritize ecological principles and biodiversity preservation. Key operations at this facility include native seed collection, processing, and storage, as well as plant propagation, cultivation, and harvesting.
If you would like to learn all about their nursery operations, and participate in native seed collection, join the Lake-to-Prairie Chapter and the forest preserve district’s Nursery Program Manager, Kelly Burdick for this fun and educational experience. It’s a great opportunity to see first-hand the vital job they do there. Participants must be at least 10 years of age and accompanied by an adult if under 18.
Space is limited to 20 so please RSVP us at [email protected] if you would like to attend this event.
