Invasive plant species, like buckthorn and teasel can pose a significant ecological problem as they can rapidly spread and outcompete native plants, disrupting entire ecosystems by taking up vital resources like water, sunlight, and nutrients, ultimately leading to a decline in biodiversity and impacting wildlife populations.
Our presenters for this month will discuss 13 invasive plant species found in Lake County, Illinois We will learn about the identifying characteristics of these non-native bullies and the best time of year to manage them. Plus, discover key steps to introduce native flowers, shrubs and trees into your home landscape.
About Our Speakers
Brett Peto is an Environmental Communications Specialist that has worked for the Lake County Forest Preserves since 2017. A graduate of Elmhurst University in 2015, he uses many communications tools—writing, graphic design, photography, public speaking and more—all in the service of educating and connecting the public to nature. Brett writes, hosts, edits and mixes every episode of Words of the Woods. He is also a feature writer for Horizons, the Forest Preserves’ award-winning quarterly magazine.
Eileen Davis is an Environmental Educator who has variously served the Lake County Forest Preserves as an intern, volunteer and staff member since 1997. She earned her B.S. in Zoology and Environmental Biology from Eastern Illinois University and her M.S. in Environmental Education and Interpretation from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Eileen teaches people of all ages about Lake County’s diverse ecosystems and the plants and animals that call them home. In her free time she enjoys tending her home garden and traveling in search of new nature adventures.
